Understanding GST slabs

India's GST system uses four main rate slabs — 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% — applied based on the category of goods or service. For processing fees, insurance premiums, and most loan-related charges referenced elsewhere on this site, 18% GST is the standard applicable rate.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate GST on an amount?

If your amount excludes GST, multiply it by the GST rate and add that to the amount: GST amount = Amount × Rate / 100, Total = Amount + GST amount. If your amount already includes GST, back out the base amount first: Base amount = Amount × 100 / (100 + Rate), then GST amount = Amount − Base amount.

What are the current GST rate slabs in India?

GST in India is charged at four main slabs — 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% — with the applicable rate depending on the category of goods or service. Essential items often fall under 5% or are exempt, while luxury and sin goods attract 28%, sometimes with an additional cess.

What's the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?

For a sale within one state, the total GST rate is split equally between CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) — e.g., an 18% rate splits into 9% CGST + 9% SGST. For a sale across state lines, the full rate is charged as IGST (Integrated GST) instead, collected by the centre and apportioned to the destination state.
